Use word documents from home, at school or work

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Lots of people come to schools (all schools) with their documents, charts and graphs for printing because maybe you need to edit it / need help with it a school or maybe you don’t own a printer at home and you simply want to print the document at school.

This is simple and effective solution for most people, but, there can be some issues with this process.

Most of us are running Microsoft Windows XP at home and lots of us are running Microsoft Windows Vista which are very similar in many ways, One of which they both run programs like Word or Excel. You may have noticed that there are many versions of these such as Word 2007 or the one we use at the school, Word 2003.

Both of these are much alike in that they both allow you to make documents with pictures, graphics, charts and other rich formats. There is one thing that sets these apart. Although they pretty much do the same thing, they save in different formats and there is a twist.

When you save a Word 2007 Document, it saves it for compatibility with other 2007 editors. The downside is these are not compatible with older versions of Word, example Word 2003. The twist is, when you save a Word 2003 document, you can open it in both Word 2003 and Word 2007 because since Word 2007 is a newer version, it retains the capabilities of previous instalments of the program.

In a brief summary of what this is about, you cannot use a 2007 document with word 2003, 97 etc , but you can use a 2003, 97 etc to make a document and later open it in Word 2007.

The solutions

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The solutions to the problem are here. The second solution is near the bottem and is best used in the case of having to open the document emediatly, without going home and saving it as a word 2003 document.

This first solution involves you re-saving the document that you are working on now in Word 2007, for compatibility with Word 2003 (essentially, this makes it work in Word 2003 and word 2007). Note: this must be done on the computer that the document is being saved to be taken to school.

Step 1:

Click the Office Button on the top left hand corner of Word 2007.

Step 2:

Move your mouse pointer over Save As. Then, click on Word 97-2003 Document in the sub-menu that appears.

Step 3:

Ensure that save as type is set to Word 97-2003 Document and the file name ends with .doc.

The second solution

____________________________________________________________________________________

This is as simple as clicking a couple times and then re-opening the document. Thats it! (note, you can avoid this step by doing the following things at home)

1. Download this file, by Clicking, Choosing "Run" and then wait for the file to download.

2. After the file is finished downloading, Click "Run" again to confirm you want to run and install the program.

3. Click through any prompts that say "are you sure you would like to run the file" or anything similar.

4. Wait. That is the key, don't click cancel even if the program looks un-responsive.

5. After the installation is complete, you may close word (if it is open) and re-open the file you wish to edit/print
